Congrats newly designated maid of honor! You have so much to look forward to! Writing the perfect/touching/funny maid of honor speech. And dress shopping. And advising on flower arrangements. And cakes. And corralling the bridesmaids. And running interference with that inappropriate family member who has a 50/50 chance of ruining the wedding. And planning a bridal shower that’s not all about making dresses out of toilet paper. And then, of course, there’s the bachelorette party…

Once you have your checklist in hand, it’s not too much to think: “Obviously I love you to death, but where’s my maid of honor?”

We’ve been lucky enough to have served that role for dozens of maids of honor over the past year as bachelorette party planners, and now we’re here to provide our lessons learned. Here, they are! The 6 things we wish we had known when we first started planning bachelorettes for our clients:


Chat with the bride early to figure out what she wants to do, who might be invited, and all about them if you don’t know them already. Things to ask: where they’re coming from, how she knows them, what kind of budget they might have, any food or activity restrictions, and what they’re like.


Your CIA-level intelligence will help you plan and provide some good opportunities to delegate tasks to others who are better at them. The graphic designer friend is probably going to design the best t-shirt. The consultant will know all the flight and hotel options. Play to your strengths and ask for help with all the things you’re not good at.

Start early, but build in time for a bit of a scramble right before the weekend. You may be the most organized planner in the world, but at least one person won’t book their flights until the morning before. Rather than stressing, just build this into your plan. Set deadlines for decisions and payment and work in flexibility where you can. If you’re the last minute person and you’re in charge of planning, consider finding a co-planner to deal with the early logistics.


Everything will cost a little bit more than you expect. Take whatever you think the party will cost and add 15% whenever you’re budgeting. It’s always much easier to tell everyone something is a little cheaper than you thought than the other way around.



On budget, get a sense of what all the attendees can afford to spend … and the things that matter to the group. A group of foodies might be willing to splash out on a once-in-a-lifetime dinner, while they’re happy with pretty basic accommodations. Another group may really want to relax in a beautiful villa on the sea, but don’t want a lot of expensive activities. Putting a couple of concrete options on the table can help people realize what they do and don’t care about much more quickly. Provide some examples so people can choose.


Most importantly, once you’re there – pause and relax. Remember to take pictures, even if you normally hate them. Be 30 minutes late for dinner (just call the restaurant to let them know) because everyone really needed to keep the pregame dance party going. Embarrass her to death with a slideshow presentation. Play bachelorette Jeopardy with a category devoted to all the Nicks (all six of them) that’s she’s dated. In twenty years, those are going to be the moments everyone remembers.
