5 Things to Consider When Picking Groomsmen Attire

When it comes to wedding attire, everyone knows that the bride’s dress gets all the attention — that’s a given. But that doesn’t mean you and your groomsmen can’t have your style on point!

So you don’t look like a Hemsworth from the neck up?

That’s okay. No one does!

But you can still make your spouse weak in the knees when they see you at the altar.

From ideas on what to wear to tips on ordering suits, here’s our full guide to groom and groomsmen attire for a super stylish wedding:

How Formal Will Your Wedding Be?

Before you know it, someone is going to be calling you hubby! But first, you’ll need to decide what you’ll wear when you say “I do.”

Dress codes exist for a reason, and as one part of the happy couple, you get to decide on the formality of your entire event. With your soon-to-be spouse, decide on a dress code and follow it to a T!

Having a black-tie wedding in a grand ballroom at a five-star hotel? Keep it classy with a black tuxedo, white shirt, and cufflinks (think James Bond).

Throwing a formal wedding at an estate or an upscale catering hall? Wear a tux or take it down a notch with a dark and dashing black, dark grey, or navy blue suit (a la Ryan Gosling in La La Land).

Having a beach wedding or a barn wedding?

Channel your inner Leonardo DiCaprio (as Jay Gatsby, not Jack Dawson) in a two or three-piece suit in a light, neutral color. If you haven’t seen it in a while, go back and watch that Gatsby scene where they’re all in that hot NYC hotel room — that’s the suit we’re talking about.

If you throw an ultra-casual wedding on a tropical island, a breezy pair of linen pants and a lightweight button-down shirt might be all you need!

And don’t forget about the accessories.

Whatever your wedding style, get creative with extras like bow ties, cufflinks, suspenders, pocket squares, and socks. They say the clothes make the man, but sometimes, the accessories speak even louder!

When Is Your Wedding?

Consider the season and the time of day of your wedding before you select groom and groomsmen outfits.

Opt for lighter fabrics like linen or cotton if you plan to say “I do” in the blazing hot summer sun. For a cold-weather winter wedding, consider a stylish wool suit or a luxurious velvet jacket.

The key is to embrace your personal style in a way that meets the level of formality of the event and feels appropriate for the season.

When to Order Your Suit or Tux

Whether you choose a suit or a tux, shop for your looks about 3-5 months before the wedding. Before ordering, either in a store or online, get measured by a professional to ensure the perfect fit.

Try on your looks about one week before the wedding. Garments rarely fit perfectly, and it’s common to need to make minor adjustments to sleeve and hem lengths. If need be, visit a tailor for last-minute alterations.

If you opt for tux or suit rentals, ask the rental shop when you need to return the items. Not returning them on time may result in added fees.

Wear Your Wedding Shoes for Your Final Fitting

Once you decide on the color and fabric you’ll wear, select your footwear. The groom and groomsmen don’t have to wear the exact same shoes, but they should be similar and be the same color so the wedding party looks coherent in wedding photos.

It’s important to have your final fitting wearing the shoes you’ll wear on the big day, as your shoes may affect how your tailor hems your pants.

Consult With Your Soon-To-Be Spouse

The bride’s dress is usually kept a secret from the groom – but there’s no need to keep the groom’s attire or groomsmen’s suits under wraps. It’s always best to consult your spouse-to-be before making any final fashion decisions.

You and your significant other should coordinate and complement each other on the big day. If she plans to wear an elegant ball gown adorned with crystals, choose an equally formal tux or suit. If she’s planning to wear an ivory gown, it’s best not to order a bright white tuxedo jacket.

Discussing your outfit choices in advance is the best way to prevent fashion mishaps on the day of!

The Groom Should Stand Out!

As the groom, you should stand out from your best man and the rest of the groomsmen. If your wedding party were a band, you’d be the lead singer, so dress the part!

You don’t all have to wear the same wedding suits. You should rock a slightly different look than your guys so your style shines (figuratively, unless you’re a rhinestone cowboy)

There are lots of easy ways to do this:

• You can wear a suit in a different color. You can wear the same suit but add a vest to make your look a bit more formal. You can wear a patterned dress shirt and have the rest of the guys wear solid shirts.
• You can stand out with something as simple as a tie. If your groomsmen are wearing solid ties, wear a patterned one. Or have them wear regular neckties, and you sport a bow tie.
• You can even distinguish yourself from the rest of your pack just by wearing a different colored boutonniere. Just one small, different element will make it obvious that you’re the one getting hitched!

The wedding day is not just about the bride. It’s about you too!

So, find your best look and show up looking like the man you are – polished, stylish, and ready to become the best husband of all time. You’ve come a long way since those embarrassing prom photos on your parents’ mantel, and this is the moment to flaunt it!
